His wheels were turning visibly, tracking what was happening in the room. He was choosing his words carefully, trying to engage as a good partner in therapy is supposed to. There was real effort in it.

But his body told a different story: shoulders hunched and collapsed, face drained, and eyes discouraged, staying away from mine.

The effort and the defeat were happening simultaneously.

His wife had reacted loudly and critically to a question he’d asked their adult son—something ordinary about a car repair. As we slowed that moment down and I asked him what sense he made of her reaction, he was careful at first. Eventually, he admitted it: he found her controlling and overbearing. His response in the moment had been to shut down. To refuse to engage in what he experienced as toxicity.

I reflected the meaning he’d made. The hurt underneath it. The logic of his withdrawal.

He heard me. It bounced off.

He wasn’t interested in being understood. He wanted me to tell him what to do differently.

In EFT, we are trained to work at the level of attachment meanings and emotions. To help partners feel what is underneath the pattern. To create moments where one person risks something more vulnerable or authentic, and the other can receive it.

That map is accurate. Yet in this room, with this man, it was not enough.

Because the man asking me for a solution was not primarily a man with an attachment wound. He was a man who had stopped expecting anyone to be there for him. His request for a tool—tell me what to do differently—was not resistance to the work. It was the work, presenting itself.

A man who still believes understanding is possible doesn’t require you to skip it.

I didn’t give him what he asked for, because I couldn’t. I didn’t ignore the request either.

I named how hard he was working. I named that he wasn’t interested in my understanding—that he saw no point in it. Then I stayed with that, wondering aloud how long it had been since there’d seemed to be any point in looking for someone to understand him. To be there for him.

I named the hopelessness I could feel in the room. The sense that she would never be able to see him and appreciate him. That something in him had already concluded this, even while another part of him kept showing up and turning his wheels.

I named the validity of wanting a solution. Of course he wanted something concrete. I wasn’t going home with them. I wasn’t the one who would have to live inside whatever didn’t change.

I didn’t offer this all at once. I stayed with each piece long enough to see whether it landed or would, too, bounce.

EFT illuminates the attachment meanings that organize a couple’s cycle: I don’t matter. I’m too much. I’m alone. It teaches us to lean into the softer emotions beneath the surface, helping partners risk vulnerability in each other’s presence.

What I have come to track, before any of that, is something quieter: How close is this person to the belief that any of it is possible?

Is there enough proximity to hope—or to the grief of its absence—for the work to have anywhere to land?

When hopelessness is this complete, asking for emotion is asking someone to risk something they have already concluded is pointless. The request for a solution is not a defense against feeling. It is the feeling, organized into the only form that still makes sense.

To work with this man, I had to go to where he actually was—not to where the model suggested he should be.

This is also where the question of therapist responsibility shifts.

For a long time, my quiet pressure in rooms like this was: find the right reflection, the right question, the right way through. As though the next move might finally unlock what hadn’t shifted.

What I have come to understand is that this pressure, however well-intentioned, is part of the problem. When I am organized around producing movement, I am adding to the pressure already in the room. The room is already full of two people who have been trying to produce something for a very long time.

My role is not to move the work forward. It is to create conditions where movement becomes possible if the system is ready to organize in that direction.

That shift echoes another reflection, The Distance We’ve Had to Travel to Survive, where I explore how healing begins by appreciating the distance someone has needed in order to survive before expecting vulnerability.

It means staying present with shoulders slumped and eyes discouraged, without trying to lift them. It means naming hopelessness without rushing toward hope. It means validating the request for a solution without becoming the person who provides one.

Sometimes it means simply being someone who stays in a room where the deeper conclusion is that no one does.

I don’t know what, if anything, shifted for him that day.

What I noticed was that toward the end of the session, his eyes came to mine briefly. I didn’t see hope, exactly, but something less defended than what had been there before.

That was enough.

The first thing I track in a therapy room now is not emotion.

It’s distance.

How far someone has had to travel from themselves in order to survive—and how carefully their body has learned to hold that distance.

Most clearly, the distance shows up in the eyes. Rarely are they present and near. Some focus somewhere else entirely, as if following something unfolding in another world. Others stay just away from mine. Some are open but shuttered inside, the way a house can look lit but empty. And sometimes the eyes engage—the head nods, the words respond—but the feeling inside them remains dull and distant, the emotion no longer matching the movement.

It was the first thing I tracked when she and her partner sat down across from me.

She was anxious about being there—about committing so much to saving their marriage. I appreciated the honesty of it.

As she talked about the problems in the relationship and her wife’s affair, her voice dripped with hostility.

When she spoke about her childhood, the stories sounded well-worn. The tone carried a familiar edge:

Are you going to see me as the broken one, too?

From Emotionally Focused Therapy, I learned to recognize movements like this as protests against devastating attachment messages:

I don’t matter. I’m too much. I’m alone. I’ll be abandoned.

EFT taught me to lean toward hostility rather than pull away from it—to see anger not as pathology but as protest, and to look beneath it for the softer emotions that often bring people back into connection.

But as she spoke that day, my attention kept returning to something else.

Distance.

Not as a moral virtue we should already possess, but as a practice—a skill set that develops over time when we place ourselves in the right environments.

Every profession has its training grounds: rehearsal studios, kitchens, universities, coding boot camps, dojos, internships, and weight rooms. But in relationships, we expect mastery without practice. We assume that love should somehow give us the capacity to stay open, honest, and grounded in the moments we’re most overwhelmed.

What we come to believe about our worth and what we expect to receive from others isn’t solely a reflection of our caregivers. It also mirrors what we perceive and absorb through our schools, workplaces, televisions, devices, and all our social interactions.

At seventeen, I won the lottery to secure a summer job at a chemical factory in East Chicago Heights, then often referred to as “the worst slum in Chicago.”

It paid high union wages, and I loved it. At the top of every hour, I’d walk the plant floor, in and out of concrete buildings, gathering small production samples. Then I’d hustle to the lab to dissolve, weigh, measure pH levels, and breathe in a mix of talcum dust, boiling acids, and burning chemicals.

My coworkers were all Black and Hispanic adults. The executives—who were primarily white—stayed in the administration building and rarely set foot on the plant floor.

I didn’t yet understand that I was moving through a world that saw and treated me differently—and that those differences, though mostly invisible, had been shaping us all along.

At the time, I didn’t think much about it. I egocentrically saw myself in a positive light, viewing myself as naturally intelligent, motivated, and inclined toward advanced education. I assumed that was the reason my path differed from those around me.

It would be decades before I learned from anti-racist teachers how profoundly different the culture’s expectations were for me. I had internalized them without even realizing it. I hadn’t “earned” my future in the way I believed—instead, I had been groomed for it, encouraged and supported in ways others were not.

What I also didn’t realize until much later was how much I had gained from those early environments. In ways I’m still discovering, they inspired me to grow beyond who I was otherwise conditioned to be.

I felt more at home in that factory than I ever did in the quiet, self-conscious middle-class suburb where my parents had bought a house.

My coworkers laughed and flirted, calling each other out and trading insults. Everyone teased, complimented, and criticized one another, and no one seemed to take it too personally.

During the midnight shift, the foremen joined us in the lab at 3:00 a.m. to play poker for an hour, then we plugged in fake test results with a collective wink.

It was reckless and irreverent—and also deeply human. I could have fun with people. Feel closer to them and more alive.

From that world, I learned that people can care more about each other than about their careers, homes, or appearances.

I saw that being seen doesn’t have to mean being impressive. That connection can flourish even amid chaos. I didn’t learn this from my white, middle-class suburban culture. I learned it from my Black and Latinx coworkers on the night shift in a factory.

We often focus on how trauma shapes personality, and it does. But the ongoing social conditioning we receive from the world around us plays a more powerful role in shaping who we become than we often realize.

Often outside our awareness, social conditioning teaches us what kind of person we’re allowed to be.

It determines which gets noticed, ignored, or judged.

It shapes whether and how we’re expected to grow.

It influences our self-worth, our capacity for joy, and our sense of belonging.

Sometimes, the places we think of as rough or broken turn out to be the places that teach us how to be fully human.

Always, the possibilities for learning, growth, healing, and transformation are multiplied by the variety of people and cultures we experience.

EFT brings the active dynamics between and within individual people to light, empowering people to see, validate and appreciate their reactive coping strategies. EFT focuses on the attachment longings and fears — the emotions — beneath the presenting content and coping strategies. With EFT, clients have the experience of being deeply seen, felt, and held. Clients grow to give themselves and each other that same sense of security. EFT deescalates negative patterns between and within. When safety has been established, EFT goes deeper to heal relationship wounds and transform negative views of self and other.
